Chemical vs Non-Toxic Natural Oils
Insect repellents can be broadly classified into chemical and natural repellents.
Chemical Repellents
Chemical repellents like DEET have been proven to be effective in repelling insects but can have side effects. Case reports of toxicity from DEET have been well documented in the medical literature and symptoms range from rashes, dizziness, headache, nausea and in rare cases death. In addition, several of the reported cases of significant toxicity from DEET exposure are in children under the age of eight. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued precautions regarding the use of DEET on children.
Natural/Non-Toxic Repellents
